Produced by the marine conservation charity Blue Ventures, Kokoly demonstrates the human impact of over-fishing and ecological breakdown affecting communities worldwide.
The music needed to tie together four months of different scenes from Madame Kokoly’s turbulent life. The initial brief was to create something that was cinematic, while incorporating the location of Madagascar and the intimacy of this human story.
The soundtrack was led by a haunting cello solo, standing alone amongst a background of textures from Madagascan instruments. The lonely instrument reflected Madame Kokoly and her endurance in the face of daily challenges.
For this project, I recorded the exceptional cellist Kristina Craven. Kristina’s playing communicates so much emotion, adding a whole new dimension and depth to the film’s soundtrack.
