Secrets of a Wallaby Boy is a modern-day comedy feature directed by Kieron Moore, inspired by the 1970s movie Confessions of a Window Cleaner.
When I was approached to compose music for the film, the director was clear that the 1970s’ film was to be a definitive reference point in the soundtrack. Kieron wanted a ’70s-style main theme for the lead character, Tim. Whereas the antagonist, Bruce, was to have a contrasting synthesised theme like that of an old video game.
To achieve a suitable sound, I used the saxophone as my focal instrument for its wide range of expression and deep brassy sound that pinpoints that ‘70s vibe.
I also opted to ‘dirty up’ the instruments by using vintage tape saturation, creating a homage to the sounds of the era.
